Meditation Sessions
For all meditation sessions, participants may use their choice of floor cushions or comfortable chairs. During Silent Meditation members use whatever technique they choose to focus their attention, i.e. following their breath, mentally repeating a mantra, or reflecting on something such as compassion, faith, lovingkindness, etc. The Stressbusters sessions vary, featuring different types of meditation (i.e. guided, music, walking, etc.) for stress relief, to simply relax and unwind. The Insight Meditation sessions incorporate brief readings and/or CD recordings that develop varied topics involving principles of Insight (or Vipassana) Meditation. (For details on these sessions, see the link NEW! Insight Topics.) No experience is necessary for any of the meditation sessions.

"Smile at Fear" DVD Series
As an extension of the final film in our DVD series, “Seven Spiritual Leaders,” on the first Sundays at 3 p.m. beginning in February we are showing "Smile at Fear", a series of teaching sessions held by Pema Chodron during a weekend retreat .
We all have fears, but when we look closely at them, we discover that behind each fear resides a basic fear of ourselves. We’re afraid to look at our habitual styles of thinking and behaving because we might not always like what we see. Ironically it is this fear of honest self-reflection that keeps us trapped in patterns of stress and discontentment. Here is a vision for moving beyond this most basic fear to discover the innate bravery, trust, and joy that reside at the core of our being. In this recorded retreat, Pema Chödrön shares teachings inspired by the book Smile at Fear, which was written by her teacher Chögyam Trungpa. She, and her teaching assistant, Carolyn Rose Gimian, also share practices they received from Trungpa Rinpoche for courageously meeting ourselves in the present moment, including:
• The Windhorse Practice: a three-step meditation on awakening confidence
• Spiritual Warrior training for meeting life with courage and compassion
• Meditation instruction for calming the mind and developing concentration

Chanting with Indukanta
The Peace Practice offers a Chanting session on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m.
Chanting is a sacred yoga practice that involves singing different names of the Divine that stills the chatter of the mind and resonates deep within the heart. Yogis, saints, and sages have long been aware that sound vibrations affect states of consciousness.
The chants are based on scientific usage of saound and vibration that touches the heart and sweepes away the woes and worries of the mind. Sanskrit words do not merely represent a rational experience of the meaning itself. Because of the intertwining of sound and meaning, some of the benefits associated with a steady and consistent practice of chanting are: developing concentration and witness consciousness, overcoming fear, healing physical ailments, acquiring self-confidence, and spiritual recharge.Anyone can have the experience of chanting. There are no special requirements. The most important criteria resides within one's own heart that is willing to open to its own innate joy. To quote Krishna Das, known around the world for his chanting sessions, "You just sing from your heart. You have to figure out what that means."
All are welcome, so join us any time to enjoy the spiritual energy and peacefulness generated by chanting. Sessions are open to the public, and donations to support our programs are gratefully accepted.
Indukanta Udasin , a native of Ohio, is a classically trained musician and composer with over 25 years of experience . She has also studied music in India and has had the privilege of living there for several years. Along with a passion for music, she is an equally passionate student, practitioner, and teacher of yoga . She is the former director of the Spiritual Lifestyle Program and the Vowed Order of the yogic renunciates at Kripalu Center for Yoga in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. A new arrival to the Lynchburg area, she is discovering a love of gardening, kayaking and walking the many local hiking trails .

Laughter Yoga
In May we began offering sessions of Laughter Yoga on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, at 7 p.m. led by Certified Laughter Instructor, Kristin Jo Freed.
Laughter Yoga is a revolutionary idea, simple and profound, that originated with Dr. Madan Kataria, a Physician from Mumbai, India, who launched the first Laughter Club in 1995. Today, it has become a worldwide phenomenon with more than 6000 Social Laughter Clubs in about 60 countries.
The philosophy of Laughter Yoga is that anyone can laugh for no reason, without relying on humor, jokes or comedy, and during sessions "simulated" laughter soon turns into real and contagious laughter. The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on a scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between "simulated" and real laughter, so the same physiological and psychological benefits are derived. Join us to laugh "just for the health of it!" (For more information, visit www.laughteryoga.org )
